Discover City Works (Mellody Farm - Vernon Hills)

Visiting City Works (Mellody Farm - Vernon Hills) at 929 N Milwaukee Ave, Vernon Hills, IL 60061, United States, is an experience that blends casual comfort with gourmet flair. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere immediately feels lively yet relaxed, perfect for both family dinners and catching up with friends over craft beers. The interior balances modern industrial design with warm wood accents, creating a welcoming environment that makes lingering over a meal a true pleasure.

The menu at City Works is impressively diverse, offering everything from classic American comfort foods to elevated small plates. One of my personal favorites has been their pretzel bites paired with beer cheese-crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfectly seasoned. For mains, the truffle fries and the signature City Works burger are consistently crowd-pleasers, with layers of flavor that demonstrate careful preparation and a deep understanding of taste combinations. Seasonal items rotate regularly, ensuring there’s always something new to try, whether it’s a fresh seafood dish or a limited-time craft cocktail.

In terms of beverages, City Works shines with an extensive selection of draft beers, showcasing both local craft breweries and international favorites. During my visit, I tried a flight of IPAs and stouts, which not only offered a chance to explore different flavor profiles but also highlighted the restaurant’s commitment to providing quality choices for beer enthusiasts. Their bartenders are knowledgeable and approachable, often recommending pairings based on personal taste, which adds a layer of expertise to the dining experience.

Customer service here is another standout feature. The staff is attentive without being overbearing, creating a balance that encourages diners to relax while still feeling well cared for. On one occasion, I watched a family celebrate a birthday, and the team went out of their way to ensure everything ran smoothly, from customizing a dessert plate to providing quick, friendly service. Reviews across platforms consistently note this level of attentiveness, reinforcing the restaurant’s reputation as a dependable spot for both casual meals and special occasions.

What sets City Works apart from other restaurants in Vernon Hills is its attention to detail in both food and service. Their kitchen demonstrates precise techniques, such as carefully layering flavors in sauces and perfecting textures in baked items, reflecting years of culinary expertise. According to a recent report by the Brewers Association, gastropubs like City Works that integrate craft beer selections with thoughtful menus see higher customer retention and satisfaction, which aligns with the positive experiences I’ve observed firsthand.

The location itself is highly convenient, situated in Mellody Farm, making it accessible for local residents and visitors alike. Ample parking and a vibrant surrounding area enhance the overall experience, encouraging diners to explore nearby shops and attractions before or after their meal. Whether visiting during a weekday lunch or a weekend dinner, the energy of the restaurant feels dynamic yet comfortable, making it an ideal choice for a variety of occasions.

City Works also demonstrates a commitment to quality sourcing and consistency. Ingredients are fresh, and the presentation reflects professional culinary standards, reinforcing trust in every dish served. While the menu is extensive, the team ensures each item meets high expectations, from appetizers to desserts. One limitation is that during peak hours, waits can be slightly longer, but the attentive staff and inviting ambiance typically make the time pass quickly.

Ultimately, dining at City Works (Mellody Farm - Vernon Hills) is about enjoying expertly crafted food, diverse drink options, and a welcoming environment. From the flavorful menu selections to the knowledgeable staff and well-curated location, every aspect contributes to a memorable dining experience that encourages repeat visits and strong word-of-mouth recommendations.

  • The fries were amazing. The brisket tacos tasted fresh. The popcorn chicken tasted alright, maybe more flavor. Tastes a bit bland. The service is somewhat slow ( both getting food and getting the check )but the waitress was polite and attentive. At least the food was warm. The atmosphere is very pleasant with the music, restaurant is also pretty quiet which is nice. Music choice is good. Good menu layout, informative Note: they already add 20% tip. Bit weird ( and unethical ).

  • Angelica was so friendly and an attentive server. The food was great. The burgers are always cooked perfectly. I asked for my burger medium and it was perfectly pink. CW is always our go-to after a movie at the mall - convenient, great service, an excellent beer list!

  • Don't let the name fool you, this place isn't just for after-work drinks. City Works has a serious secret weapon: their weekend brunch. I'm writing this review knowing full well it's probably being read by someone standing in a 45-minute line across the street at Buttermilk, waiting for overpriced pancakes. To those poor souls, I say this: come here instead! While Buttermilk focuses on all things breakfast, City Works offers a small but mighty brunch menu that expertly tackles both sweet and savory cravings. From the Bananas Foster Pancakes to the hearty Hangover Bowl, every dish is well-thought-out and executed. And here's the kicker: the drink options. City Works has a full bar with a vast selection of beers, plus cocktails and great coffee. You won't find that across the street. The wait is shorter, the menu is fantastic, and you can get a proper beer with your breakfast burger. It's a no-brainer.

  • Burgers are incredibly delicious in this place and come with many different options I chose a salad and it was like actual wonderful and tasty. On top of it all they so many varieties of beer to try including my favorite - raspberry nitrogen induced flavored beer ...so yummy delicious. My only hope is that I can start selling it in growlers but that's the only kind of apparently that they can't package due to the nitrogen thing.
